Israeli Organ Donors to Get Better Treatment (17th December, 2009)

Israel has a new plan to get people to donate organs. A new law means people who carry organ donation cards will be first in line to receive organs, if they need them. Signing a donor card also means the donor’s family members will higher in the queue if they need a transplant. This scheme is to encourage more Israelis to become organ donors. Only ten per cent of Israeli adults have signed a donor card. This figure is much lower than in Western countries. More than thirty per cent of adults are organ donors in Europe and the USA.

This is a fantastic idea. Donating your organs after you die helps other people live. I feel great that my body can help people when I’m gone. However, there is a better system. There should be a law that everyone is an organ donor unless they say no. There could be a special piece of paper they sign that says they do not want to donate organs. Organ donation is a tricky subject in many countries. Some cultures think all of the body should be whole when it is buried or cremated. I wonder if the new Israeli law will work.
