Thai Army Ready to Use Bullets in Street (20th April, 2010)

Tension between Thailand’s government and anti-government protestors is increasing. The situation is getting very dangerous. The Thai army announced on April 19 that it would use real bullets to keep the peace in the streets. Thousands of red-shirted people are marching in the streets to protest against the government. Many of them have weapons. They want the Thai prime minister to resign. An army spokesman said: “We will start using tear gas, and if the protestors break the line, we need to use guns.”

Thailand has a long history of people protesting in the streets. Many people have lost their lives in the past few decades. The current government is being more patient. Protestors started their campaign at the beginning of March. So far, the government has broken up protests with tear gas and riot police. If the army starts shooting people, there could be big trouble. The Thai government is worried about the economy. Street battles will badly damage Thailand’s tourism industry. In addition, foreign companies might invest in other countries.
