Shark Kills Tourist in Egypt (6th December, 2010)

A German woman was killed by a shark on December the 5th at one of Egypt’s most popular resorts. The lady, aged around 70, was swimming in Sharm el Sheikh on the Red Sea. Other tourists said the attack was like something from the movie Jaws. The oceanic whitetip shark attacked the woman’s arm and she later bled to death. A resort manager said: "The woman was just swimming to stay in shape. Suddenly there was a scream for help and a lot of violence in the water. The lifeguard got her on the reef and he noticed she was severely wounded."

The Red Sea resort is a very famous tourist attraction. It is particularly popular with scuba divers and snorkelers. Around three million holidaymakers visit each year. The reefs in the Red Sea have some of the best diving in the world. There was a series of shark attacks before December the 5th and authorities closed the beaches to look for the sharks. They found and killed two, and then reopened the water on December the 4th. A local diver was surprised at the attacks. He told reporters, “the area hasn't had sharks for the past 10 to 15 years”.
