New North Korea Leader Mourns His Father (21st December, 2011)

North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong-un, has appeared on television mourning his father. TV channels showed Kim Jong-un leading a group of mourners to the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in Pyongyang. The body of his father Kim Jong-il has been laid out in a glass coffin inside the palace. He died suddenly from a heart attack on Saturday morning. National television called Kim Jong-un, who is 27 or 28, "a great person born of heaven". They also said their new leader was “the outstanding leader of the party, military and people.”

Little is known about Kim Jong-un. Korean Central Television say his “thoughts are exactly the same as those of [his father] the Dear General”. He went to school in Switzerland and people say he loves the basketball star Michael Jordan. He is the youngest of Kim Jong-il’s three sons. The North Korean government decided in 2009 that he would be the country’s next leader. He is now head of a nation where 24 million people do not have enough to eat. His country does not have enough food to feed its people, but has nuclear weapons.
