World Leaders Attack Koran Burning (9th September, 2010)

World leaders have made statements expressing their anger over the Koran-burning plan of an American churchman. They fear the event could lead to violence around the globe. Terry Jones, leader of a small church in Florida, plans to burn Korans on September 11. He said his plan is to stop the building of a new mosque near Ground Zero, New York. He wants the mosque relocated and said his “International Burn A Koran Day” would not be cancelled unless the mosque was moved away from the site of the 9/11 attacks.

President Obama spoke on U.S. television and asked Mr Jones to stop his “stunt”. He said: "This is a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaeda. You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan. This could increase the recruitment of [people]…willing to blow themselves up in American cities or European cities." Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari attacked the plan, saying it would cause irreversible damage to world peace. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said it went against all Christian teachings.
