Suu Kyi Arrives In Europe (14th June, 2012)

Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi has arrived in Europe for the first time in 24 years. She had spent most of the past two decades under house arrest, unable to leave Myanmar. She landed in Geneva on Wednesday night and received a hero's welcome. She wore three white roses in her hair and smiled and waved to the crowd. Her 17-day tour will take in five countries - Switzerland, Norway, Britain, Ireland and France. She will also finally collect the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991.

On Thursday, Myanmar's opposition leader will visit the U.N.'s European HQ in Switzerland. She will then fly to Oslo to accept her Nobel prize. After that, she will head for Ireland, where she will appear at a concert hosted by Amnesty International and meet Bono from U2. She will then return to England, where she lived and studied in the 1970s and where her husband came from. She will make a speech to the British government and accept an honorary doctorate at Oxford University.
