McDonald's India Opens Vegetarian Restaurants (6th Sept, 2012)

The hamburger restaurant giant McDonald's will soon open two vegetarian restaurants in India. The company will swap its traditional meat burgers for the McAloo Tikki burger, a potato sandwich, and the Pizza McPuff, a vegetable and cheese pastry. It is the first time for McDonald's to open vegetarian restaurants anywhere in the world. The new locations will be in cities that are popular pilgrimage sites for Hindus and Sikhs. The company is looking at ways to add to its 271 restaurants across India.

McDonald's first entered India in 1996. It had to create a special menu that did not include beef or pork. Hindus believe the cow is a sacred animal and should not be killed; in Islam, pork is forbidden and should not be eaten. A spokesman from a Hindu group opposed the opening of the new restaurants, saying: "McDonald's is an organization [linked to] cow slaughter. If we make an announcement that they're slaughtering cows, people won't eat there. We are definitely going to fight it."
